Hi MiniMaggers!

MiniMag - Easy Science Special Edition

The History of Chemistry • Chemistry is the study of matter. Matter is everything around us – things we can see and some we cannot see. Matter can be solids, liquids or gases. In chemistry we study properties of matter and also do experiments to find out how substances react with each other. Chemistry is used all around us, every day!

Modern Chemistry • From 1550 to 1650, very important discoveries were made in the mining and medicine industries. Jan Baptist Van Helmont (1577 - 1644) was the first person to use the word “gas” (from the Greek word “chaos” meaning shapeless matter.) During the second half of the 17th century modern chemistry, the way we know it, was born. Robert Boyle investigated gases and agreed that matter consists of atoms and elements exist.

The four elements of matter • The ancient Greeks believed that there were four elements that everything was made up of: earth, water, air and fire.

The human body and HORMONES • Hormones are chemicals that are produced in the endocrine glands of our bodies. These play a vital role in many of our body processes like growth, metabolism and even mood.

Digging deeper: Taking a look at various soil types • There are many different types of soil, and they can be classified based on various factors such as texture, composition and pH level. Here are some common soil types and brief descriptions of each:

Go with the flow! Investigating the ins and outs of INERTIA • Inertia can be defined as a tendency for something which is at rest (standing still) to remain at rest, but also as a tendency for something which is moving (in motion) to keep moving. It sounds complicated, but if you think about it, it’s quite simple. Inertia is the change in momentum of an object, depending on its mass.

Galileo’s Gravity Games: Unravelling motion’s marvels! • Galileo used his inclined plane experiment to demonstrate the law of falling bodies. He apparently exhibited it to groups of clergy and aristocrats, as shown in this 1839 fresco by Florentine painter Giuseppe Bezzuoli.

The gravity games • Get ready to embark on an exciting experiment that will defy gravity and leave your friends bouncing with excitement. Let’s dive into the world of balls, balconies and a whole lot of physics fun!

Geoscience is magical!– and geoscientists are the lucky wizards who get to explore the mysteries of the Earth • Scientists are inquisitive and imaginative people who go around asking questions that often begin with the words “why” and “how” and “what if” and “why not”.

Geoscience reveals secrets Journey through Earth’s hidden wonders • If you look carefully at a mountain range, you can often see how layers of rock have been deformed into structures that look like “waves” – these waves are called folds by...
