On the first night of Hanukkah, a weary traveler named Hershel of Ostropol eagerly approaches a village, where plenty of latkes and merriment should warm him. But when he arrives, not a single candle is lit. A band of frightful goblins has taken over the syna-gogue, and the villagers cannot celebrate at all! Hershel vows to help them. But can one man alone stand up to the goblins, save Hanukkah, and live to tell the tale?

Opening with Klezmer-like music, Kimmel's beloved Hanukkah story shines in this new audio edition. Narrator Gildart Jackson's rich baritone and measured pacing bring out the humor and violence of Hershel's battle for the spirit of Hanukkah against a host of fearsome goblins. A full range of sound effects and occasional Eastern European music enhances the tale, although both sometimes nearly overwhelm the narration. For the most part, there's just enough time to turn the pages, allowing listeners access to Trina Schart Hyman's Caldecott Honor illustrations. Sadly, the production omits the excellent author's note that explains the traditions of the holiday, particularly the rules for playing dreidel, so children who listen without the book may not understand how Hershel cheats the goblins.
